Jeffco Public Schools has partnered with local law enforcement agencies to provide free firearm locks at high schools. Colorado law requires gun owners to store their firearms in locking devices out of the reach of children or anyone not allowed to access them.

How to get a Free Firearm Lock

Jeffco community members are welcome to pick up a free firearm lock at any Jeffco high school.

1. Visit a Jeffco high school anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday–Friday.

2. Go to the main entrance and buzz the front office. Let the front office staff know you are there to pick up a free firearm lock.

3. A member of the campus security team will meet you at the school entrance to give you a free firearm lock.
   • The school staff will note that a lock has been distributed, but will not collect any contact information.

Please note, it is a felony to bring a firearm onto any school premises. Firearm locks will only be given to adults, not students.

About the Firearm Storage Program

Jeffco Public Schools has partnered with our local law enforcement agencies to provide free firearm locks through a national organization called "Project Child Safe" which partners with law enforcement agencies across the country. These firearm locks are available at no cost to community members. 

Firearm Safety Resources for Families

Safe Kids Colorado, led by Children’s Hospital Colorado, is a partnership of statewide and regional organizations dedicated to preventing unintentional injuries to Colorado children from birth to 19 years old. Safe Kids Colorado is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of more than 600 coalitions and chapters nationwide, including 19 member countries.

The Safe Kids Colorado state office provides support to local Safe Kids coalitions and chapters in the state and utilizes a combination of education, research, advocacy and media to prevent accidental injury in children. Their passion is to help you and your family to be safe.
